In this workshop, Ziya Azazi and Meric Firatli share their research on dervish spinning and sound experience, guiding participants through a journey from vibration to essential verticality. Open to anyone who wishes to explore the relationship between body, mind and heart, this workshop is for adults of any age and from diverse professional background.
Dervish in Progress (DIP)
By whirling participants are challenged up to their limits and learn how to spend less energy yet raising their body awareness to a higher level. Whirling is not the aim but rather the means by improving one’s physical, emotional and mental consciousness. Through some preparatory practice, participants are led to perceive sensations arising while turning on their axis. In doing so, they explore different movement dynamics. Stretching and breathing exercises enhance concentration and prepare body and mind to gain the necessary strength for dealing with mental and physical limits. Then, through floor work, body work, explorations of the spatial planes and the practice of improvisation, participants become more aware of their senses and body structures, so to prepare themselves to meet the challenge of the new and still unknown perceptual experiences that the whirling will induce. With and without Dervish Skirts, whirling is based on repetitive movements on both the vertical and horizontal planes.
The work is done individually, in partners and group forms. Whirling together with a partner or in a group is an absolutely unique opportunity to discover habitual patterns and one’s subtle aspects of behavior in daily life. Reaching the misty state of spinning, and perceiving all the sensations that come with it, leads the person to experience the unknown in a more resilient way, at the physical, emotional and mental levels. This leads to the in-depth experience of opening towards new visions of oneself and others.
Projects of Being (PROBE)
The sound is a potential healing tool within our lives. During the workshop, participants will be able to reflect about the meaning and value that sound has in the course of our daily life, and in various aspects of behaviors, health, relationships.
Through some theoretical information, sensory awareness and physical exercises, participants are led to the experience of listening. Then, as listeners, their journey starts within the abstract world of sound. The work then includes some practical applications and/or verbal dialogue based on sharing feedback.
During the workshop, the universe of sound is created by using gongs (tamtam), Himalayan bowls, crystal bowls, wind chimes, shaman drums and several percussive instruments, violin and human voice. The sound experience allows the participants to slow down their heart beats, decrease their level of cortisol, change their brain waves. There is a shift from an active to a resting state from which synesthesia may be experienced. This fusion of all the senses in one whole perceptive body-mind is very similar to the state of consciousness during deep meditation. Experiencing distinctive states of consciousness shall give way to changes in life attitude and perspectives.
